BargueEncore celebrates the bicentennial of the birth of Jean-Léon Gérôme.
Learning as Jean-Léon Gerôme intended...
In the 19th century, Jean-Léon Gerôme, instructor at « L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris », realized that more and more students were leaving the school without a firm sense of beauty and refined taste. To remedy this trend, he determined to create new lithographic models to learn from, copied from classical sculptures, paintings, and drawings.
The publisher Goupil, located on the « Place de l’Opéra » in Paris, whose daughter Jean-Léon Gerôme had married, offered to promote the lithograph plates supplied by his son-in-law.
Too busy with his own work, Jean-Léon Gerôme entrusted Charles Bargue, one of his best pupils, with the task of drawing 70 of these models « d’Après la Bosse » (after 3-dimensional models, mostly sculptures).
Models as only Lemercier knew how to
lithograph them in his Paris print shop.
The publisher also turned to the best lithographer in Paris, Joseph Lemercier, to print the plates. And today, BargueEncore is reissuing these same lithographic images, restoring the beauty and quality of the originals.
It's a French tradition that continues today.
By using BargueEncor plates, schools and academies can provide their students with unrivalled teaching tools. The very same tools that have nurtured exceptional artistic talent since the 19th century.
BargueEncore plates offer much more than standard reproductions. Their lithographic quality offers an unparalleled artistic learning experience, just as Jean-Léon Gerôme and Charles Bargue intended.
